January 2014

In a short period of two weeks, near 3,000 people visited the popup opera tent in Tsueng Kwan O and watched a 90-minutes documentary of La Traviata. FAMA would like to thank everyone for their love and support. We truly hope that the public can experience the fascination of western opera and increase the awareness of classical music.

Further to the success of previous activities, The Foundation for the Arts and Music in Asia (FAMA) joined hands with the Audience Building Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) to bring the "PopUp Opera Tent” into New Territories’ community for the very first time. LCSD Audience Building Office Senior Manager Arthur Leung said: "FAMA is full of enthusiasm to promote opera and it organizes ‘The PopUp Opera’ activities in various districts. This is in line with our notion to introduce high-quality performing arts to each community. So we partner up with FAMA to provide free venue for ‘The PopUp Opera’ and help publicize this activity, which is listed as one of the events in our ‘School Culture Day Scheme’. We hope Hong Kong students and ordinary citizens can have a chance to see the performance of opera.”

For three weeks, more than 4,000 people visited Sha Tin to experience 90 minutes of Verdi’s La Traviata. One of the audience members who attended the opera with her two children said: "When we were young, we thought enjoying opera was somewhat out of the reach, but now it becomes more common. Even children today can enjoy it as well. For them, this is an initial approach to opera."

The tent also appeared at the beginning of January outside the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.  Against the backdrop of the city’s famous harbour, this spectacular structure was certainly a sight to behold.  Over a thousand people were introduced to opera through The Traviata Story in this location.

October 2012

Last October, the PopUp Opera tent amazed the people of Lok Fu, an economically-disadvantaged area in Kowloon, during the project’s inaugural outing at Lok Fu Plaza, supported by The Link.  One community member said, on seeing the tent for the first time, “This is just like discovering a diamond in a rock, which gives you a surprise and joy”.  During the tent’s residence many people experienced their first taste of Western opera.  One delighted audience-member said “I can’t believe something cultural will happen in a shopping mall in Lok Fu, so immediately, this leaves a very deep impression”. Another commented that “at first, I thought it was an ordinary show, but La Traviata is a show with rich cultural depth”.  They enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to view The Traviata Story, with over 4,000 people attending the screenings at Lok Fu.
